Violence has become
an alarming reality in today's workplace. Workplace homicide,
harassment, threats or attacks on the job are no longer unusual.
The U.S. Bureau of Justice Statistics estimates that almost
one million individuals become victims of violent crime while
at work or traveling to or from work each year The result
is diminished productivity through actual lost workdays and
psychological stress as well as millions of dollars in lost
wages.
Under federal and state occupational safety and health regulations,
employers are obligated to provide their employees with a
workplace that is free from "recognized hazards that
are causing, or likely to cause, death or serious harm to
the employee."
Workplace violence, then, merits serious attention by organization
managers and top executives. A step in that direction is to
develop training programs for all managerial and supervisory
personnel so that managers and the organization itself do
not contribute to the conditions that lead to workplace violence.
Training programs that enable everyone in the organization
to better understand workplace violence and its causes may
well be a second step toward violence prevention.
Executives and other managerial personnel clearly need to
act so as to reduce the threat of workplace violence. Numerous
books, articles, workshops, seminars, and the like proffer
advice to them on how to do that. However, virtually all that
advice comes from psychologist, physicians, and lawyers. What
has been lacking is advice that would not only reduce the
threat of workplace violence but advice that, if followed,
would enable organizations to develop potential competitive
advantages in terms of their personnel and productivity.
This book fills that need. It is a first in that the advice
and information in it is from a managerial point of view.
The authors have spent their careers intimately involved with
the practice, teaching, and research on management and organizations.
